Our Mission
Independence Classical Academy exists to provide a disciplined and highly engaging learning environment rich in scholarship, character building, citizenship, moral virtue, civics, and liberal arts. This time-tested, classical liberal arts education will ensure students are highly prepared, through rigorous and relevant core content with an emphasis on literacy, to be highly productive and successful citizens with a strong sense of character and civic responsibility.
Our History
Independence Classical Academy opened in 2020 by Director Sandy Howard, whose unwavering vision was to provide more for the children of Fort Pierce — more opportunity, more purpose, and more excellence in education. Opening in the midst of a global pandemic, ICA began as a bold idea that many said couldn’t be done. Through determination, faith, and community support, it became a thriving school that continues to grow each year. Built in Fort Pierce, by Fort Pierce, and for Fort Pierce, ICA stands as a testament to what is possible when a community comes together to create a place where teachers can teach and students will learn.

ICA proudly offers the highest starting base pay for teachers in St. Lucie County, recognizing that exceptional educators deserve exceptional support. Independence Classical Academy is guided by a dedicated administrative team committed to supporting our mission of providing a rigorous, virtuous, and excellent classical education. Each member of our leadership team plays a vital role in ensuring that ICA remains a safe, structured, and academically strong environment where teachers can teach and students will learn.
Mrs. Sandy Howard, Founder and Director of Operations
As the founder of ICA, Mrs. Howard leads with vision, purpose, and a deep commitment to classical education. She oversees daily school operations, supports faculty and staff, and ensures that ICA remains true to its mission and values. Her leadership has been instrumental in building an environment rooted in structure, high expectations, and genuine family partnership.
Mrs. McFarland, Assistant Director of Academics
Mrs. McFarland guides the academic program at ICA, ensuring that curriculum, instruction, and assessment reflect the high standards of classical education. She works closely with teachers to support instructional excellence and student mastery, helping maintain ICA’s reputation for strong learning gains and academic rigor.
Mr. Danny Mullins, Director of Student Services
Mr. Mullins oversees student services with a focus on meeting the diverse needs of ICA students. He supports students and families through academic accommodations, behavior plans, and essential services while ensuring that each child has the tools and support needed to thrive.
Mrs. Jessica Chancey, Dean of Students
Mrs. Chancey plays a key role in maintaining ICA’s safe, structured, and respectful school culture. She supports student behavior, discipline, and character development while reinforcing the virtues and expectations that define the ICA community.
Mrs. Barbara Cross, Director of Business Services
Mrs. Cross handles all financial and operational business functions of the school with precision and professionalism. Her work ensures that ICA continues to operate smoothly, responsibly, and in service of students, families, and staff.
