Our Mission
Independence Classical Academy exists to provide a disciplined and highly engaging learning environment rich in scholarship, character building, citizenship, moral virtue, civics, and liberal arts. This time-tested, classical liberal arts education will ensure students are highly prepared, through rigorous and relevant core content with an emphasis on literacy, to be highly productive and successful citizens with a strong sense of character and civic responsibility.
Our History
Independence Classical Academy opened in 2020 by Director Sandy Howard, whose unwavering vision was to provide more for the children of Fort Pierce — more opportunity, more purpose, and more excellence in education. Opening in the midst of a global pandemic, ICA began as a bold idea that many said couldn’t be done. Through determination, faith, and community support, it became a thriving school that continues to grow each year. Built in Fort Pierce, by Fort Pierce, and for Fort Pierce, ICA stands as a testament to what is possible when a community comes together to create a place where teachers can teach and students will learn.

Each member of our team is highly qualified, holding advanced degrees, professional certifications, and subject-area endorsements that reflect a deep commitment to academic excellence. More importantly, they hold themselves to a higher standard — modeling the virtues, discipline, and professionalism we seek to instill in our students. ICA proudly offers the highest starting base pay for teachers in St. Lucie County, recognizing that exceptional educators deserve exceptional support. As the founder of ICA, Mrs. Howard leads with vision, purpose, and a deep commitment to classical education. She oversees daily school operations, supports faculty and staff, and ensures that ICA remains true to its mission and values. Her leadership has been instrumental in building an environment rooted in structure, high expectations, and genuine family partnership.

A Fort Pierce native and Westwood High School graduate, Mr. Jason Lawson is proud to serve the community that helped shape him. He brings more than 13 years of experience in education to Independence Classical Academy, including work as a certified social studies teacher, school counselor
Dean of Scholars and School Mental Health Counselor
A Fort Pierce native and Westwood High School graduate, Mr. Jason Lawson is proud to serve the community that helped shape him. He brings more than 13 years of experience in education to Independence Classical Academy, including work as a certified social studies teacher, school counselor, and school leader. He holds a master’s degree in education with a specialization in school counseling.
Before entering education, Mr. Lawson served nearly seven years in the United States Marine Corps, where he worked in global security operations and trained newly commissioned officers. His experience continues to shape his approach to leadership, accountability, and service.
As ICA’s Dean of Scholars and School Mental Health Counselor, Mr. Lawson focuses on building positive relationships with students, families, and staff. He believes every student deserves someone willing to listen, set clear expectations, and help them recognize their potential. He is equally committed to supporting teachers as they help students succeed.
Mr. Lawson and his wife, Cortni, recently returned to Fort Pierce after nearly three decades away. He is a proud husband, father, and “Pop Pop.”

Mr. Mullins oversees student services with a focus on meeting the diverse needs of ICA students. He supports students and families through academic accommodations, behavior plans, and essential services while ensuring that each child has the tools and support needed to thrive.
